菊屋家住宅是萩藩富商菊谷家的住宅。菊谷家原侍奉大內氏並住在山口，在大內氏滅亡後便成為町人（江戶時代居住於都市的工匠與商人）。1604年，跟隨毛利輝元進入萩，受領目前的宅地並建造住屋。此為日本全國最古老的現存商家宅院，擁有400年歷史。主屋建造於江戶初期，內有寬廣的榻榻米房間，包括主屋在內的5棟建築物已獲指定為日本國家重要文化財。
