A one-day sightseeing plan for Shodoshima that includes a visit to some popular noodle shops

A visit from Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture to Shodoshima for a day of sightseeing. Having tasted the famous udon noodles at Hashigo in Takamatsu, you board the ferry for Shodoshima, a laid-back island with some superb scenery to photograph. Driving around the island, you get to visit an old soy sauce warehouse and a resort and taste some of Kagawa's best food.

    If Kagawa is anything, it's the home of udon noodles. Your first stop is this super-popular self-service noodle shop. The thick, elastic noodles here are eaten in a soup stock of sardine and kelp that is good enough to drink on its own. There are some 50 different types of tempura to choose from, so a moment of indecisiveness is inevitable.

    Another self-service udon shop, Chikusei usually has a line of eager eaters outside when it opens at 11 a.m. The tempura are all 100 yen each. You must try the runny egg tempura, which started here and is now popular across Japan. Mix the egg in with your noodles and slurp.

    From Takamatsu's Sunport ferry terminal, catch the ferry to the resort island of Shodoshima. The crossing takes about an hour. The ferry is clean and comfortable, and there are superb ocean views.

    Nakayama Senmaida is one of the top 100 rice terraces in Japan. The area is huge, with some 800 rice fields sloping up 120 to 250 meters above sea level. It is a scene straight out of old Japan. The best time to visit is from early summer, when the rice planting begins, to autumn, just before the harvest.

    It's enjoyable to simply stroll among the 2,000 olive trees here. The movie "Kiki's Delivery Service" was filmed here, so it comes as no surprise to learn you can have a photo taken of yourself riding a flying broom. Before you leave, quench your thirst with some olive cider.

    This museum is maintained by long-established soy sauce maker Marukin. Here you can learn about the history and culture of soy sauce manufacturing that has continued unbroken in Shodoshima for more than 400 years. Marukin's premium soy sauce is naturally fermented in large wooden vats. It's also used in its ice creams, which you must try.
