It takes only 30 minutes by car from Matsuyama to the town of Tobe. After interacting with wild animals at a popular zoo, you head to the historical town of Uchiko for a step back in time that both adults and children will enjoy. This trip ends with a visit to a secluded railway station and a stunning ocean view.

    Begin the day at the first zoo in Japan to successfully rear a polar bear from birth. Today, Peace, as the bear is known, is the zoo’s most popular resident. You’ll also get to see the dexterity of tightrope-walking orangutans and the power of lions up close. In this dynamic display of wildlife, you get so near to the animals that you can feel their breath.

    Next stop is Uchiko, a town that once prospered through the manufacture of vegetable wax and traditional washi paper. The museum here operates out of a house once inhabited by a merchant family during the Edo and Meiji eras. Within, you can see recreations of a pharmacy and a typical house from the period and learn about how people once lived in Uchiko. Be sure to listen to the museum’s speaking mannequins.

    A trip to this traditional theater, one of only 20 in Japan, should not missed. Built in 1916, it was renovated in 1985 after being saved by Uchiko's residents. Visitors are encouraged to fully appreciate the architecture. You are free to cross the “hanamichi,” or catwalk, onto the revolving stage, and even check out the stage trapdoor.

    This recreation of a neighborhood from 1950s Japan is for many a trip back in time to the good old days. Laid out like a movie set, with retro signboards and old cars, it’s an ideal space for photography.
