ถูกสร้างขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 747 โดยสมเด็จพระจักรพรรดินีโคเม เพื่อวิงวอนนขอให้พระจักรพรรดิโชมุหายป่วย ในสมัยนาราเป็น 1 ใน 10 วัดขนาดใหญ่ของนาราที่มีพระภิกษุกว่า 100 รูปมาปฏิบัติธรรมในบริเวณวัดอันกว้างใหญ่ เมื่อเข้าสู่สมัยเฮอันได้ทำให้มีขนาดเล็กลงด้วยสาเหตุจากฟ้าผ่าและพายุใต้ฝุ่น ตอนที่สร้างพระอุโบสถนั้น ยังคงเป็นแบบเดิม ๆ นอกจากภายในจะมีพระปางนั่งสมาธิของยะคุชิเนียวไร แล้วยังเป็นสถานที่ประดิษฐานรูปปั้นยืนของพระจูนิชินโชอีกด้วย
