- During the Meiji era to the Showa era, this island became one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Hashima was a coalmine city that flourished during the modernization of the 1940s. When the coal ran out the island was abandoned, and between 1974 – 2009 it was closed off from visitors. Today it's open for guests, however to access it you have to sign up for an organized tour. Contact the Nagasaki Municipal Government to book a trip.

- One of the most iconic sites of Nagasaki, Megane Bridge is a stone bridge that stretches over the Nakashima River in downtown Nagasaki. A popular tourist attraction, the bridge gets its name from the fact that when its two arches are reflected in the water they resemble a set of spectacles. With its historic buildings and lush green foliage, it makes for an excellent strolling route.

- After strolling along the river, make your way to Glover Garden, an open air museum situated not too far away. Positioned atop a hill that was once populated by some of the city’s main foreign contingent, the garden area now exhibits mansions once belonging to come of the city’s wealthier foreign residents. The main attraction is the Former Glover House, a large western style wooden house that once belonged to Scottish merchant Thomas Glover. Be sure to charge up your camera as the scenic views of the garden by the bay are simply unforgettable.
