850년에 창건된 천태종의 사원. 창건은 지카쿠 대사라고 전해져 내려온다. 볼거리는 불당과 연못이 일체로 되어 있는 '정토정원'. 일본에서 가장 오래된 정원서인 '작정기'의 사상과 기법을 현대에 전하는 귀중한 정원으로서, 모츠지의 상징이다. 절의 경내는 특별사적으로 지정되어 있으며, 엔넨이라 불리는 가무는 중요무형민속문화재로 지정되어 있다.
