- Start the day at Matsuyama Castle, which looms over the city of Matsuyama. The castle is recognized as the last of the old castles to be completed in Japan. The view from the very top of the great tower is magnificent, with Shikoku’s highest mountain, Mt. Ishizuchi, on one side and the Seto Inland Sea strait of Iyo-nada on the other.

- No visit to Matsuyama would be complete without a soak in the hot springs at Dogo Onsen. The baths, which are only for public use, are said to be the oldest hot springs in Japan. There are four bath styles to choose from as well as private rooms that can be rented for a few hours. The building itself is fun to visit, as its interior is a complex design that resembles a maze.

- After lunch it’s time for some local culture in the form of haiku. Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), who was born in Ehime, is recognized as one of Japan’s four great haiku poets. The museum has close to 60,000 artifacts related to the life of Shiki and his close friend and famed author Natsume Soseki. The museum also holds events on a regular basis.

- Located 1 kilometer away from Dogo Onsen, Ishite-ji is the most famous of the Ehime temples that make up the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage temples. The temple grounds are large and contain a number of peculiar attractions, including a cave in which Kukai (774–835), founder of the Shingon Buddhist sect, is said to have spent time in ascetic training. There are also kuhi, or stone slabs, inscribed with haiku by Shiki and Soseki. While you’re there, take a break and try the toasted rice cakes, which are an Ishite-ji specialty.
