Noboribetsu Jigoku Festival

Event
Legends say the door to hell opens in the Noboribetsu hot spring in Hell Valley and Yama (the King of Hell) emerges with a parade of demons and ogres and descend upon Noboribetsu. This legend is the foundation of a grand festival during the last weekend of every August. 100 young people shout lively as they carry a 1-ton mikoshi (palanquin shrine) of a red ogre, and a throng of ogre dancers perform with hell festival musicians. Huge flowered fireworks paint the sky during the large fireworks display on the final day.
