Numata Festival

Event
Said to have originated in the Edo period, the Gion festival of Suga Shrine is a large celebration which merged with a commercial festival in 1970, by the people of Numata City. The festival consists of Suga Shrine and Haruna Shrine's legendary mikoshi (portable shrines) carried and displayed throughout town; parade of mando floats and tengu palanquins which are only carried by women; a 1000-person dance; as well as various Shinto rituals and events. The entire city comes alive with festivities.
