Mt. Kuju Opening Festival

Event
This traditional ceremony welcoming the opening of summer climbing season on the Kuju Mountains is held every year on the first Sunday of June, alternating between Mt. Taisenzan and Mt. Kujusan. After the peak-top ceremony praying for the safety of climbers, pennants decorated with the year's Chinese zodiac symbol are handed out as souvenirs. The even coincides with the blooming of Kyushu Azaleas, designated as a National Natural Monument, so visitors can enjoy the mountains covered with a carpet of pink flowers. There are shuttle buses running to the mountain entrance on the day of the festival, and many tourists and climbers alike come to enjoy the festival.
