Awa Dance (Awa Odori)
Not only is this one of Shikoku's three largest festivals, but one of Japan's three biggest Bon Odori dance festivals. Boasting over 400 years of history, this is a true Japan tradition. There are various theories as to how it started, including that it originated in 1587 to celebrate the completion of Tokushima Castle, but no one is sure of the details. During the Awa Odori festival, about 100,000 spectators and dancers from all over Japan come and dance the night away in rhythm with the hayashi music.
