Sakata Festival

Event
The annual festival of Hie-jinja Shrine held since 1609, in 1979 the festival name was changed to the Sakata Festival to commemorate the city's recovery from the Great Sakata Fire. The festival parade is truly thrilling-great shishi lions, the symbol of the festival, are accompanied by smaller shishi lions as they wind their way through the city. One of the most popular elements of the festival is the shishi pakkun, in which children are place into the mouths of one of the great lions to be bitten to guarantee good health in the future.
