Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival
Designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Fukushima Prefecture, this history-laden Shinto ritual is considered one of Japan's three greatest lantern festivals along with the Akita Kanto Festival and the Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival. The highlight of the festival is the yoi-matsuri pre-festival held the night before when visitors can see all of the taiko drum parade floats from the seven participating neighborhoods all together. The floats parade through city while innumerable lanterns, lit from the sacred fire of Nihonmatsu-jinja Shrine, swaying and dangling from them, young men shout stirring cries and strike their drums.
