Aomori Nebuta Festival
The Aomori Nebuta Festival combines several traditional events into one-the Tanabata festival, which was conveyed to the area from China in the Nara period; the ancient custom of sending off the dead, doll and pest-driving away parades, and other long-held Aomori customs. Nebuta are five meter tall illuminated festival floats modeled after kabuki stories and legends; the sharp glares of the figures depicted are particularly distinctive. Parading through the city to the sounds of reverberating drums and cries of rassera!, the Aomori Nebuta Festival is a stunning event and highlight of summer in Aomori. The grand finale fireworks display is also a must-see.
