Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival
This Tanabata festival was started in 1951 as a measure to promote commerce after the end of World War II. The center of the city and other areas are decorated with over 500 brilliantly colored traditional bamboo decorations, engendering a festive atmosphere. The larger ones exceeding 10 meters in height decorating the primary venue area of Shonan Star mall are a must-see in particular. One unique feature of the festival is the incorporation of the likenesses of popular athletes, cartoon characters, and other famous personages into the decorations. Concerts, a parade, and other events are held during the festival, enlivening the Shonan summer.
