Yosakoi Festival

The Yosakoi Festival was started in 1954. In this uniquely Japanese festival, some 200 teams totaling close to 20,000 people dance with naruko wooden clappers at nine contest venues and seven theaters in the city of Kochi. Participants wear eye-catching outfits and parade cars are extravagantly decorated; meanwhile, the dances and music used by dance teams range from classical Japanese to Samba and rock music. One after another, teams perform dances designed around specific themes and ideas, dazzling onlookers.
