Gion Matsuri Festival

Event
Considered one of Japan's three greatest festivals, the Gion Matsuri Festival is the annual festival of Yasaka Shrine. This traditional event boasts a history stretching back over 1,000 years. Held every July, the festival is conducted over a period of one month and consists of various events such as the yamaboko-tate, the yoiyama, and the Gion-bayashi. One of the highlights of the festival is the parade of the yamaboko, 25 meter tall traditional festival floats which some extol as moving art museums. The festival was registered a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.
