Sanja Matsuri (Festival)
The annual festival of Asakusa Shrine, a Shinto shrine with over 700 years of history. Known as the greatest ara festival held today, the festival is conducted over a three day period and attracts around 1.5 million attendees. It is also considered one of the three great Edo festivals. The highlight of the event occurs on the last day when the shrine's own portable shrine is paraded around each neighborhood in the city before returning at night. The sight of this portable shrine arriving home to the red welcoming glow of paper lanterns is truly magical.
