Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri (Tomiokahachimangu Reitaisai)

Event
The annual festival of Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine, the Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri (Festival) is considered one of the three greatest Edo festivals. Over 50 portable shrines are carried through the city to cries of wasshoi! during the stunning rengo togyo. Vigorously splashing the shrine bearers with water to purify them is a summer tradition in Fukagawa. During a true festival year, which occurs once every three years, the shrine's gohoren Imperial carriage as well as 120 neighborhood portable shrines big and small are also carried around the city.
