Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival
Boasting close to 600 years of tradition, the Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival is held by Tsushima Shrine and considered one of Japan's three greatest river festivals. The festival starts with a smaller festival the night before the event proper in which paper lanterns decorating Tsushima Gosha boats floating on the Tenno River are lit up. The sounds of Tsushima whistles filled the air and the light of the boats' lanterns reflecting off the waters of the river is magical and beautiful. The following morning, spectators can enjoy the stunning sight as 10 pole bearers jump off the lead boat and swim to shore to run towards the shrine. The festival was registered a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
