Hachigatsu Odori Dance
A festival held to pray for abundant harvests conducted over a three day period starting on the eighth day of the eighth month according to the old lunar calendar in Tarama, Miyako District, Okinawa Prefecture. Said to have been started to celebrate the payment in full of a cruel poll tax, this traditional event has been conducted continuously for around 400 years. In 1976, the festival was designated a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. From morning to night, traditional dances, kyogen farces, and kumiodori kabuki performances are conducted, attracting large numbers of visitors from all over.
