Kashima Shrine Saito Festival

Event
An event held to pray for bountiful harvests and peace which announces the arrival of spring in the Kashima area. In 1976, the festival was designated a national Selected Intangible Folk-Cultural Property. During the festival, a stunning parade of some 400 colorfully garbed musical performers march through the streets as oak poles are crossed together and uncrossed to cries of Iyato! Hoyoto! Hoya! On the grounds of the shrine, the performers play all together, and the sound of the bands and the clashing of the oak poles swells to thrilling volumes.
