Saidai-ji Temple Eyo
Considered one of Japan's three great naked festivals. The festival's origins are said to date back to the Eisho era (1504-1521) -the protective talismans distributed by the temple became renowned for their effectiveness and were so popular the temple was inundated with people seeking to receive one, forcing the priests to throw their limited number of talismans randomly among the crowd of people. Held on a cold winter night, some 10,000 men wearing only a loincloth gather at the temple's Kannon-in hall, then race to position themselves below a window in the temple's main hall and fight to take possession of one of two sticks thrown out the window. The two men who get hold of the sticks are called fuku otoko (lucky man) and are said to be guaranteed happiness for one year.
