Nagasaki Lantern Festival
The Nagasaki Lantern Festival is a winter tradition in Nagasaki. The festival originally started as an event conducted by the residents of Nagasaki's Chinatown to celebrate Chinese New Year. For a 15 day period, some 15,000 Chinese lanterns light up the area around the Chinatown in reds and golds. Various illuminated sculptures big and small are arrayed in the area as well, and the dazzling and whimsical scenery attracts visitors from around the country and the world.
