Lantern Floating and Fireworks Festival
This classic Obon festival has as its backdrop Fukui Prefecture's Kehi no Matsubara, one of Japan's Top 3 Seashore Pine Groves, along with Shizuoka's Miho no Matsubara, and Saga's Niji no Matsubara. After setting approximately 6,000 red, blue, and yellow lanterns adrift on the ocean, 13,000 fireworks are launched above the bay. The immense starmine display, launched from various points, reaches over one kilometer in length, completely illuminating the sky over Tsuruga Bay. With over 200,000 visitors annually, this fireworks festival is the largest in Fukui Prefecture.
