Sumida River Fireworks Festival
Started in 1733 and passed down through the years, this is the oldest fireworks festival in Japan. It is counted as one of Tokyo's two major fireworks displays, the other being the Edogawa-ku FireworksFestival. About 20,000 fireworks launched from two venues brightens the night sky, including traditional fireworks such as chrysanthemums and willows, as well as more recent creations. At the first venue, 10 of the top pyrotechnicians in the country compete in a fireworks competition that whips the crowd into a frenzy. While you can't stop to watch in some places, including Azuma Bridge, we recommend loose-fitting, breathable clothing to let you take in the display while strolling along the Sumida River.
