Oku-hiei Enryakuji Temple Precincts

Oku-hiei Enryakuji Temple in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, which occupies the whole Mt. Hiei of 848 meters in height as its precincts, is a well-known viewing place for late-blooming cherry blossoms. From late April to early May, 1,000 cherry blossom trees from about 40 varieties come into full bloom including double-flowered cherries, Shogetsu cherries, Kanzan cherries, Fugenzo cherries, Kirin-zakura cherries and Oshima-zakura cherries. Many worshippers visit every year to enjoy the scenery of blooming cherry blossoms in three areas such as Todo, Saito and Yokawa as well as on the Enryakuji Oku-hiei Driveway. The double cherry blossoms in the Saito Parking Area are particularly famous. In the Saito area, the Hieinosakura, a cherry blossom festival, is also held to time with the best blooming season. A fee applies to enter the temple. Cherry blossoms in the evening can be viewed only on the driveway. Toilets and parking available.
