Funaoka Joshi Park
This 136-meter-tall mountain was preserved as a park centered around the castle ruins of the Shibata family. It features 1,000 cherry trees like the Yoshino and weeping cherries. The area is tinged a pale cherry color during peak season, when spectacular blossoms form a tunnel over the slope car connecting the base and peak of the mountain. From the mountaintop, there is a gorgeous view of Zao Mountains, the senbon-zakura of Shiroishi River’s bank, and the town below, attracting many visitors each year. The best time for viewing is early to mid-April, with the trees lit up at night. Slope car (roundtrip) costs 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for children. Toilets, shops and parking available. The nearest station is Funaoka Station.
