Tama Forest Science Garden, Forest and Forest Products Research Institute
The Forest and Forest Products Research Institute undertakes research on forest plants and animals. Within the Institute’s grounds, there is a Forest Science Museum, an arboretum, and a Cherry Tree Preservation Forest. The Cherry Tree Preservation Forest, which covers an area of around eight hectares, has around 1,400 cherry trees, including examples of important cherry tree varieties from all over Japan, and clones of famous individual trees. The cherry blossom season starts in February and March with the early-flowering Kanzakura and Kawazu-zakura varieties, followed later by the Yoshino, hill cherry and weeping cherry varieties, etc. The peak time when the cherry blossom is at its best is from late March through into late April. The Tama Forest Science Garden is open from 9:30 to 15:30 (last admission at 16:00). The admission charge is 300 yen for adults and 50 yen for high school students and younger. The Garden is closed on Mondays (except when a public holiday falls on a Monday, in which case the Garden is closed on the next working day; the Garden is also open on Mondays during March and April). Toilets are available. The nearest station is Takao Station.
