Kasumigajo Park
Kasumigajo Park in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture was built on the site of Nihonmatsu Castle (also known as “Kasumigajo Castle”), a castle associated with several tragic stories, including the death in battle of the young soldiers of the “Nihonmatsu Youth Corps” when the castle was captured after a fierce battle in the Boshin War (1868–1869) in the process of Meiji Restoration. Today, Kasumigajo Park is a nature park; besides having been designated as a National Historic Site, it has also been selected for inclusion in the “Top 100 Finest Castles in Japan” and in the “Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots.” From early April through into mid-April, around 2,500 cherry trees of several varieties (including the Yoshino cherry variety) are in bloom in the Park, enabling visitors to enjoy an extraordinarily beautiful scene—a veritable “mist” of cherry blossoms (Kasumigajo means “Castle of the Mist”). The Nihonmatsu Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year for a period of around one month, usually starting in early April; during this period the cherry trees are illuminated in the evenings. Toilets and parking available.
