Daikakuji Temple
Located in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, this is the head temple of the Shingon Daikaku-ji school of Buddhism. Originally a villa built for Emperor Saga, the temple is accordingly connected to the Imperial household. It is also a renowned destination for cherry blossom viewing. The area around Osawa-no-Ike Pond, a National Place of Scenic Beauty located on the temple’s grounds, is planted with a row of cherry trees; the peak blooming period is usually around early April. During this time some 500 Yoshino cherries, hill cherries, and other cherry tree verities come into full bloom, giving visitors the chance to enjoy a truly elegant and picturesque scene. Temple grounds are open from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30); entry is 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for elementary, junior high and high school students. Paid parking available.
