Daigoji Temple
A Buddhist temple and head temple of Shingon Daigo Buddhism, the entirety of Mt. Daigo makes up the temple’s grounds. The temple’s grounds are dotted with numerous National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, including a National Treasure-designated the five-storied Pagoda. The temple is also considered one of the best destinations for cherry blossom viewing in Kyoto, and even the great Toyotomi Hideyoshi came to the temple to enjoy its flowers (so called Daigo no Hanami or Blossom viewing in Daigo). Each year in spring, the various cherry tree varieties at the temple bloom one after the other for around a three week period, starting with Kawazu-zakura cherry trees, then weeping cherries, Yoshino cherries, hill cherries, Oyama-zakura cherries, and others. Particularly famous are a Yoshino cherry believed to be the oldest in Kyoto, as well as the Sanboin hall Yae red weeping cherry tree. The nearest station is Daigo Station. During the cherry blossom season, the grounds are open from 9:00 to 17:00 (tickets sold until 16:00, last entry 16:30). Entry is 1,500 yen for adults, 1,000 yen for junior high and high school students. Shops, toilets and paid parking available.
