Kamo-wake Ikazuchi Jinja

Located in Kita Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, this Shinto shrine is the oldest shrine in Kyoto, and its entire grounds are registered as a World Heritage Site. Famous as a site for viewing cherry blossoms, in spring cherry trees bloom in profusion from the shrine’s first torii gate to the main shrine building, and visitors can enjoy verities such as Yoshino cherries, hill cherries, Beni-shidare-zakura cherries, and Shiro-shidare-zakura cherries. The shrine is particularly famous for its Gosho-zakura and Saio-zakura cherry trees, which generally come into full bloom around early April and mid-April, respectively. Parking and toilets available. The shrine is open to the general public from 5:30 to 17:00 (hours may differ depending on festivals, etc.).
