One of the eight most well-known hot spring districts in Beppu City known as the Beppu Hatto. Takegawara Onsen, a hot spring bathhouse with a gorgeous Chinese-style gabled roof which serves a symbol of Beppu Onsen, is located here. The district is famous for its sand baths, which involve visitors lying down in sand wearing a yukata robe and being covered by sand heated by the site's natural hot spring waters. Noted in the Iyo no kuni fudoki, an ancient chronicle of the area, this history-leaden hot spring resort only truly entered the limelight starting in the Edo period. The Beppu Hatto Onsen Festival is held primarily in Beppu Onsen each year in April and its biggest attraction is a huge parade called Yu-Bukkake festival in which participants and onlookers are splashed with over 40 tons of local hot spring water.
