Yuki Onsen
Said to have been discovered some 1,500 years ago, this hot spring district serves as the retreat of Hiroshima. Consisting of ryokan inns standing eave to eave along a river, one of the things that make this district so popular is the song of kajika frogs and the sight of fireflies visitors can enjoy. The waters of the area's simple mildly radioactive springs are said to treat such ailments as rheumatoid arthritis, sensitivity to cold, minor high blood pressure, and chronic illnesses. Yuki Town's weeping cherry trees come into beautiful bloom in spring and are popular with photography lovers. Whatever time of year you come, there's some seasonal specialness waiting to greet you, including fireflies in summer, hiking in autumn, and ancient kagura Shinto music and dance performances in winter. In addition, Sandankyo Gorge, considered one of Japan's five most beautiful gorges and a designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty, is located just a 90 minute drive away.
