Futsukaichi Onsen
This hot spring district boasts a long history and its praises were even sung in the ancient Man'yoshu poetry anthology. There are many hot spring bathhouses and inns in the area, such as the Hakatayu, an inn founded in 1860, and the district attracts large numbers of tourists. The Kyushu region boasts many hot springs, but even so, Futsukaichi Onsen's radioactive springs are a rarity; their waters are said to be a cure-all, reportedly treating such ailments as cuts, burns, skin diseases, hardening of the arteries, nerve pain, joint pain, rheumatism, diabetes, gout, sensitivity to cold, and infertility. They are also said to moisturize and beautify the skin. The hot springs of the district appear in the ancient Man'yoshu, and area visitors can enjoy both history and picturesque scenery in addition to hot spring bathing.
