Tomonoura Onsen
This brand new hot spring district, located on the tip of the Numakuma Peninsula, was only first developed in 2002. The area's radium springs boast some of the highest radium quantities in the country and their waters are said to treat nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, and other ailments. In addition to hot spring hotels and inns, area visitors can also take in the natural beauty of Sensuijima Island and choose from a wide array of hot spring options, from high class resort-style hotel bathhouses to casual day trip hot spring facilities. Tomonoura is centered on Teramachi-dori Street, a road built in the early Edo period by Fukushima Masanori, builder of Tomo Castle, as part of the town beneath the fortress, and the area has many shrines and temples which visitors can walk amongst and explore. The area also grew and developed as a prosperous port town, and accordingly is dotted with many historic sites and old-fashioned townscapes as well as monuments warning of the dangers of tsunami waves.
