Shimobe Onsen
Situated along the Shimobe side of the Fuji River on the west side of Mt. Fuji, this mountain hot spring village has flourished as a destination for curative hot spring waters since ancient times. Selected as one of Japan's 100 most famous hot springs, according to legend, during the Battles of Kawanakajima, the mighty samurai lord Takeda Shingen and many other soldiers injured in the fighting soothed their wounds in the waters here. Known as the Hot Spring which Healed Takeda Shingen , in fact it seems the hot springs here were officially recognized by the Takeda clan. The waters of the area's simple (mineral) springs are said to have a variety of health benefits and can also be drunk for further health fortifying effects. The history of the area dates back 1,200 years, and many interesting legends and traditions still remain in this hot spring district surrounded by beautiful mountain and river scenery. Visitors are also encouraged to make their way to nearby Kumano-jinja Shrine, which since ancient times has been frequented by people seeking the area's curative hot springs to pray for their health or give thanks after being healed by the waters.
