A picturesque hot spring district commanding a view of the grand Tokachi mountains. Situated at the foot of this mountainous area, this hot spring village serves as a base for many mountain climbers looking to hike the slopes of Mt. Tokachi and Biei Fuji. The area's chalybeate springs and sulfate springs contain an abundance of calcium and magnesium; known as the Cane-Forgetting Springs, their waters are said to aid recovery from fatigue in addition to easing skin diseases, cuts, burns, muscle soreness, nerve pain, and other ailments. A four kilometer long stretch of road on the way from urban Biei Town to Shirogane is lined with Japanese white birches and is known as the White Birch Highway.
