Mt. Nantai (男体山)
A 2,486 meter tall mountain located on the north bank of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. Long revered as a holy mountain, the rear shrine of Nikko Futarasan-jinja Shrine is located at the top. Lake Chuzenji, a popular tourist destination for those visiting Nikko, was created through the mountain's volcanic activity.
- Futarasan-jinja Shrine Trailhead: This trail starts from the entrance to Futarasan-jinja Shrine. It climbs about 1,200 meters. This is the most spiritual peak in Kanto, on a mountain that has been considered sacred for long ages. Every year, for one week starting July 31st, the trailhead is opened at midnight for a night climb so that climbers can welcome the sunrise on the peak. From the seventh station, there are many large stones, making walking difficult. There aren't many dangerous spots, so it's popular with climbers.
- Shizu Pass Trailhead: This back route leads to the summit from Shizu Pass. The biggest section climbs through forest land so the view is limited, but it's very popular in the fall leaf season. The trail climbs about 1,000 meters. The climbing trail is well marked so it's hard to lose, but caution is advised in heavy mist. Watch out for the red paint blazes.
