Matsukura Castle Ruins
These castle ruins once saw many battles up to the end of the Warring States period, all centered around the wealth created by gold mining in the Matsukura Mine behind it from the Muromachi into the Edo periods. The largest castle in the Ecchu region, it was also known for its near impregnability. Located at the peak of Mt. Matsukura, the massive citadel stretches one kilometer south to north, and it is divided into five areas by dry moats. It is now a prefectural public park, and is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.
