Noma River Fireflies in Tawarada District, Yachiyo Ward
The banks of the Noma River near Freuden Yachiyo, Japan's first community garden with lodging, are famous as a firefly viewing spot. A 1.3-kilometer-long promenade has been built along the Noma River, a tributary of the Kako River. The firefly viewing season runs from early to late June. 20,000 to 50,000 genji-botaru fireflies (Luciola cruciata) can be viewed during the peak periods when the weather conditions are just right. The viewing period lasts for about 90 minutes in the evening twilight starting from around 7:30 PM. During the viewing season, the fantastic sight of the firefly's boisterous dance can be seen not only in the Tawarada district but also all across Taka Town.
