Homyoji Temple

This ancient temple is said to have been founded in 810 during the reign of Emperor Saga. After receiving an official seal from Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun, this historic location has been frequented by many that were high up in the Tokugawa lineage. The path toward the Sanmon Gate is noted for its famous cherry blossom trees that have been around since the Edo era. This spot is now one of Ikebukuro's foremost cherry blossom viewing destinations, which brings in large crowds every spring.

立派なお寺

こちらは、池袋駅東口より徒歩15分にあります。立派な山門を入ると正面には、これまた立派な本堂がどーんと構えています。左手には鐘桜があり境内全体が静寂に包まれていました。

まずは階段の下から見上げる山門に驚きながら、境内へ進みました。桜の名所として有名だそうですが、晩秋で訪れる人は少なく、とても静かでした。歴史がありそうな本堂や、そこここに風情があり、時代劇に出てきても違和感が無さそうに見えました。なお、この辺りの寺院はほとんどこちらの末寺で、鬼子母神堂も飛地境内だそうです。

境内に三匹ほど見ました。門に餌のお皿が並び、飼っているか餌付けしているようです。でも近寄ると逃げられました。
