Nogata Municipal Coal Memorial Museum

A museum in Nogata district, Nogata City. On display are materials that trace the history of the Chikuho Coalfield, which produced coal for nearly 100 years since the early Meiji period and contributed greatly to the modernization of Japan. In their three exhibition halls, the main hall, annex, and coal chemistry building, you can see machines used in the coal mines and ore samples as well as a model of one of Japan's principal coal mines. In their outdoor displays you can see large-scale coal mining machinery and a steam locomotive.

My second time to visit and feel like it was far better than my first.. I walked from the station to here was very easy. The staff was very friendly and helped point out the items on display.
筑豊炭田の歴史

筑豊炭田は明治の初めから昭和５１年まで約１００年の歴史があり、たくさんの数の炭鉱があった。本館は明治４３年に建てられた「筑豊石炭鉱業組合直方会議所」で、石炭財閥たちは石炭を大量輸送するために鉄道を作ったり、坑夫への給料として払う私札「炭鉱札」を作って金儲けしていたとか、面白い話がいろいろ聞けました。入館料は１００円で年間パスポートは２００円、館長さんが詳しくガイドしてくださいました。

直方と言えば石炭。なので、直方に行けば必らず訪れるべき観光名所。コンパクトな博物館だが、筑豊地方の炭鉱の歴史がよく分かる。スタッフの方も、親切にいろいろ説明してくださった。
