Jingu Bunko

Library
The history of this library dates back to the Nara period text hall in the Naiku inner shrine area of the Ise Jingu shrine. The largest storehouse of Shinto texts in Japan, the library's collection of some 310 thousand volumes includes texts on research into Japanese culture and traditions, Shinto, literature, and history. The library has been used to store the records and texts once kept in the text hall and reliquary in the Naiku and Geku inner and outer shrine areas, and for research by Shinto priests interested in ancient rites. Emphasizing the permanent preservation and storage of its texts, viewing restrictions have been placed on many of the items in the library based on their condition and classifications such as rarity or value. The current library building was built in 1925. The library has an office and a reading room where Japanese and Western texts can be viewed.
