Sakuragaike Ikemiya Shrine

Other Natural Terrain
A five-minute walk from the Sakuragaike bus stop or a 30-minute drive from the Kikugawa Interchange, this pond is in Sakuragaike Park near Ikemiya Shrine. Located at the top of a small hill, 40 meters high, it is surrounded by trees on three sides. According to the local legend of the dragon god, Koen Ajari, a monk of the Tendai sect, subjected himself to ascetic training with hardships in order to attain enlightenment, but he was unable to master all the Buddhist law. After deciding that he would study under the bodhisattva Miroku 5.6 billion years in the future, he turned himself into a dragon and entered into the pond for eternal meditation. The park attracts large numbers of visitors to view cherry blossoms every year from late March to early April.
