One of the world's few museums dedicated to volcanoes. With a focus on records pertaining to Izu Oshima's 1986 eruption, visitors learn about volcanism, volcanic disasters, and disaster preparation. The eruption of Mt. Mihara at the center of the island was the first in 565 years as such a large-scale natural disaster that developed into a fissure eruption on the outer crater. The island had an unprecedented evacuation of the entire population, and records pertaining to it are considered crucial for future disaster preparation. Through various exhibits and a capsule that simulates exploring beneath the earth's surface, you learn more about the island's still active volcano and others around the world.

シアターを見てから見学しましょう

元町港から歩いて約15分の場所にあります。とても立派な前庭があります。施設そのものは大きくありませんが、三原山が噴火した時のことなどが、よくわかります。シアターがあるので、上映時間を予め調べて、そこを見てから見学することをお勧めします。
説明が充実していて大人でも楽しめる

大島の成り立ちの説明や過去の災害の記録の展示がありました。その他、日本、世界の火山の紹介などがあり火山の知識を得ることもできました。天気が悪い時の訪問先としておすすめできます。

大島三原山の火山活動を中心にいろいろな火山に関する記録、解説物、溶岩が展示してあり、どこのスペースでも1986年全島避難時の噴火報道が流されていました。敷地は広く、立派な建物でした。前庭には昭和の初めに三原山火口を取材しに使われた読売新聞社名の入ったゴンドラ（？）が寂しく朽ち果てようとしていました。
