Tenjinyama Tumulus

A burial mound located along Prefectural Route 2 in Uchigashima Town, Ota City. With an overall length of 210 meters it is one of the largest keyhole shaped tumulus in eastern Japan and has been designated as a National Historic Site. Due to the shape of an excavated Haniwa (hollow unglazed terracotta figure) it's believed that the tomb was constructed in the first half of the 5th century. As to who was buried in the tomb it's though that it could have been a former ruler of the Keno Domain but this is uncertain.

全容を見るのは冬がいいです

前方後円墳というと、巨大な古墳をイメージしますが、この古墳も東日本最大のサイズだそうです。夏場は木が生い茂っているので、冬場の方が全容が分かりやすいです。歩いて登ると三角点があります。ただ落葉がすごい量です。

東日本最大の前方後円墳で全長が210ｍもあり、木が生い茂っているため、地上から見ると前方後円墳であることが分かり難いかもしれません。発掘調査の結果、二重の堀で囲まれた古墳で、外堀跡には東武小泉線が通り、中堤帯跡には住宅が建ち、内堀跡には県道が横切っています。古墳中央部のところに階段があり、古墳上に自由に登ることができます。見学者用の無料駐車場は線路沿いに用意されています。

R２沿いにあって、古墳の後円部ぎりぎりの堀があったであろうところを道路が横切っています。近所の方のお話だと昔は堀の外をR2が通っていたとのことで、見ると一車線の細い道路が堀に沿うように走っていました。下草がうっそうとしていて、入って行けませんでした。手付かずって感じの自然な感じでした。
