Ryukaiin Temple

Temple
A Buddhist temple in Koun Town 2 Chome, Maebashi City. The temple was founded by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, grandfather of Tokugawa Ieyasu and lord of Okazaki Castle. It was the family temple of the Sakai clan, chief retainers of the Tokugawa family, and when Sakai was forced to relocate and became lord of the Maebashi domain the temple was moved to Maebashi as well. Later, when Sakai was relocated again this time to Himeji, the temple remained in Maebashi. The grounds of the temple are still home to a number of graves dedicated to members of the Sakai family. The principal object of worship is a trinity of wooden statues of the Buddha with Shakyamuni in the center said to have been carved by sculptor Unkei. Other statues within the temple include a carving of Kaiun Daikoku-Sonten by master craftsman Hidari Jingoro.
