Automaton Clock of Hitoyoshi Station

Other Historic Site/Building
An automaton clock in front of JR Hitoyoshi Station. With a two-level, three-story white plaster keep modeled after Hitoyoshi Castle, its movements depict the lord of Hitoyoshi Castle touring the castle town. The lighthearted melody is taken from a popular folk song of the Kuma region. A total of 17 dolls appear along with the music, including the castle's lord, a village headman, a Sagara maiden, and a group performing the Usudaiko Dance, a Kumamoto Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property. It runs every hour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (5 p.m. in winter). The clock's stone wall even features a reproduction of one of Hitoyoshi Castle's distinctive architectural features.
